Our Programs

Summer Enrichment for Girls in STEAM

In 2017, with the support of the Far Southeast Family Strengthening Collaborative and their mini-grant program, we held our first STEAM Power summer enrichment program for girls.

STEAM Power at SOME

In partnership with the community organization So Others Might Eat (SOME), we are able to provide the STEAM Power program to youth who are without access to or the financial resources to participate in similar programs.

RISE Dreamers

RISE Dreamers is our mentoring program that connects mentors with young girls who have completed a STEAM Power program and want to explore more of world of science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM).

Despite the great number of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics) programs that exist today, there is still a vast number of youth, particularly at-risk residents of low-income communities, who are overlooked and fall between the cracks of STEAM initiatives.

These children are delayed in developing an understanding of the importance of STEAM for their lives and consequently struggle in finding a place for themselves in the constantly evolving world of technology.  It is our mission to address this need.

Communities are selected based on availability of space and participation interest.   By creating a mobile classroom that has the ability to go to them, we are able to remove transportation challenges while expressing the importance that 'no child should be left behind'.

HOW ARE WE UNIQUE?

Our STEAM Power program is unique in the approach we take to each group of students.  Sessions are customized based on the needs of the students, their grades and school lesson plans.  Our goal is to keep the lessons in line with or related to what they are currently learning while giving them an edge in future conversations and assignments.

We also use STEAM to teach life lessons.  Here's an example:

Topic: Aerodynamics

Lesson: Teach the terms liftthrustdrag, and gravity

Life lesson: Discuss what/who/how the students can be lifted, what encourages them (thrust), what can be a drag on their futures and what weighs them down (prevents them from moving forward).
